The College of Community and Applied Sciences (formerly known as Home Science), Udaipur was established in the year 1966 as a part of Rajasthan College of Agriculture with graduation degree (B.Sc. Home Science). The Home Science institution acclaimed its pioneering status within the state wherein many new government and private Home Science institutes have grown and blossomed under its leadership. In 1977, the College was shifted to its present building spread over an area of 12,385 sq. m. with separate administrative and library block of 2790 sq. m.

Home Science education, a multi-disciplinary degree for girls’ students was meticulously conceived and planned by Ms Franchon Warfield as USAID Advisor and Ms Mary Wellington as In charge in its early form in 1966-67.The status of Founder Dean of the College was enjoyed by Dr Leela Phadnis in 1967, when it became independent College.

Home-Science is an applied and professional discipline to prepare an individual to obtain scientific information in the urban as well as rural context with the mandate to strengthen not only home and family but also work for community welfare and empowerment of rural women. The Home science degree encompasses broad based culturally relevant knowledge in Foods Science and Nutrition, Textiles and Apparel Designing, Human Development and Family studies, Resource Management and Consumer Science and Extension Education and Communication Management.

Since its inception, the College has made rapid growth in terms of teaching, research and extension. In the last few decades, the status of Home Science widened, and the demand of Home Science educationreached on its peak with immense job potentials.

Looking to the need of vocationalization of education, 4 year B.Sc. programme after 10+2 with one semester of vocational courses and one semester Inplant training and RAWE was introduced since 1998-99 as per the recommendations of ICAR III Deans committee.

To keep in conformity with the changing times, the College implemented ICAR recommended vocationalization of Education by offering 2+2 BSc.Home Science degreein 2006, with the introduction of CAD based curricula and concept of Experiential learning at undergraduate level. The College very proudly savoured the pioneeringstatus in establishment of ICAR sponsored Experiential Learning Unit on ‘Apparel Production Management’ in April 2008 in the State of Rajasthan and second at National level.

To further fine tune the undergraduate education for broadening it perspectives in line with industry needs and technological advancements, the recommendations of Vth Deans committee of ICAR were successfully implemented from academic session 2017-18by offering two undergraduate four-year professional degree programme, namely B.Sc. (Hons) Community Science and B.Sc. (Hons) Food Nutrition and Dietetics. In new four year 3+1 degree programmes, admission is given to both boys and girls from 10+2 stream of Agriculture and Science.

The Faculty of Home Science was renamed as Faculty of Community Science. The College also established another ICAR Experiential learning unit on ‘Designer Health Food and Bakery products’ in year 2019-20.

Academic programmes

The college offers two Undergraduate degree programme, Masters programme in all the five disciplines of Home Science and Ph D programme also in all the five disciplines of Home Science.

B.Sc. (Hons) Community Science degree

In first three years, students are offered coursesfrom all the five disciplines of Community Science, i.e, Foods Science and Nutrition, Textiles and Apparel Designing, Human Development and Family studies, Resource Management and Consumer Science and Extension Education and Communication Management.

In fourth year, an exclusive Student READY Programme is offered to final year students. The READY programme (Rural Entrepreneurship Awareness Development Yojana)comprises of five major components –Experiential learning, RAWE, In plant Training/Industry attachment, Hands on Training(HOT)/ Skill Training and Project work.In seventh semester, students are offered intensive Experiential learningprogramme for one semester followed byRAWE (in university adopted villages) and In-plant training/Industry attachment in various reputed organizations.

B.Sc. (Hons) Food Nutrition and Dietetics

In first three years, courses offood science, processing,human nutrition, therapeutic nutrition,nutritional biochemistry, food microbiology, elementary human physiology, clinical nutrition and dietetics, meal planning, etc. are offered to provide basic knowledge of theory and principles of various core subjects.

Further, in seventh semester advanced courses on Processing and Utilization ofFruits and Vegetables, Nutritional status assessment methods, Diet and nutrition counselling,etc enrich the knowledge and skills of students with thrust on skill training followed by Industry attachment and RAWE.

College has highly competent, experienced, computer literate, well versed faculty in the cadre of Professor, Associate professor and Assistant Professor, they are encouraged to regularly attend faculty development programmes organized by various ICAR Institutes, Universities and other Organizations.

The College has ‘Ragging free’, clean and green campus, water harvesting /recharging unit, solar lights, well maintained garden under green initiatives, very good facilities and infrastructure in terms of Conference Hall, Seminar rooms, building, equipment, manpower,etc. with 24x7 Internet facilities in campus to provide quality education to students through smart classrooms, Experiential learning units, well equipped laboratories, computer labs, and sophisticated advanced machineries.

The College has a well-equipped Library with latest information technology based resources like CD ROM, database search, OPAC, Internet Browsing etc. for the benefit of the students, faculties and researchers. The Library has been spread across an area of 4402 square ft and can accommodate 100 readers. The Library has robust collection of 27,000 books , good collection of national and International Journals, Book Bank. Library operations have been completely automated using KOHA software. The library linked with various consortiums for online journals.

An All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Home Science is operational in the college since 1980.

 

The College has indoor and outdoor sports facilities, canteen, well-established Girls hostel to accommodatemore than 100 students within the campus premises. It has 72 rooms including single and double seated facilities, a well-furnished dining hall and a visitor’s room. The hostel has multifarious facilities including ZENSET, solar geyser, solar lights,RO/water purifier, telephone, computers,Internet, TV, music system, water cooler, etc.
